“Flowers and Magic: A Wickedly Wonderful Tour of the Month of May”
Hi there, fellow Lorekeepers! Welcome to the month of May, the time when the world pirouettes between spring’s lush bloom and summer’s sizzle!
Once upon a blooming May…
Long ago, ancient Romans threw one of the wildest parties you could imagine: the Floralia, a festival bursting with flower petals, theater performances, and even games involving leopards and rabbits (not even kidding). This celebration honored Flora, the goddess of flowers and youth, and was basically a spring break for the ancient world.
Symbols of May — It’s Not All Roses!
You might think of lilies of the valley when you think of May — and you’re spot on. These delicate bell-shaped flowers are May’s official bloom in many countries, like France, where gifting them on May 1st is believed to bring good luck.
But did you know the gemstone of May isn’t just any green — it’s the rich, glowing emerald? Scientists studying mineralogy confirm that emeralds get their green glow from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Basically, your birthstone is infused with the power of ancient volcanoes and molten earth. Rock on!
Global Celebrations — It’s a Small, Strange World
In Japan, May hosts Golden Week, a series of national holidays when families travel, celebrate nature, and honor children. Over in Europe, May 1st is celebrated as May Day — originally a Celtic festival called Beltaine, marking the start of summer with bonfires and feasting.
Meanwhile, the U.S. chose May for National Mental Health Awareness Month, following scientific and medical advocacy starting in the 1940s.
And speaking of brains, May 20th is World Bee Day — named after the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, because bees are absolutely crucial to ecosystems and food security. Save the bees, save the world!
A Few Weird May Facts You Didn’t Know You Needed
- The month of May is named after Maia, a Roman earth goddess of growth. Maia’s name comes from a root word meaning “nurturer” — so it’s literally a month for flourishing!
- In Finland, Vappu (May 1st) is celebrated with colorful balloons, fancy picnics, and a massive student carnival — one of the biggest festivals in the country.
- Scientifically speaking, in the Northern Hemisphere, May has the highest biodiversity boom of any month — more species hatch, bloom, and awaken than at any other time.
